Filing a Roofing Insurance Claim in Oklahoma
Oklahoma sits squarely in Tornado Alley, and the insurance claims that follow major wind and hail events are a regular part of life here. If a storm has rolled through your part of Moore, Norman, or anywhere else in the metro and your roof has taken a hit, you're likely looking at an insurance claim. The process has more moving parts than most homeowners expect, but understanding the general flow before you start makes the whole thing a lot less stressful. Here's how it typically works.
Step One: Document the Damage Before Anything Is Touched
As soon as it's safe to do so after a storm, do a walk around the exterior of your home and photograph everything you can see from the ground. Dented gutters, displaced shingles, cracked vents, and damage to siding, fencing, or other structures on the property all matter. Date and time your photos if your phone doesn't do it automatically. This documentation is the foundation of your claim, and having it before anyone else arrives protects you if there's any question later about when the damage occurred. If water is actively getting in, a temporary cover can be put in place to limit further damage, and your policy generally requires you to take reasonable steps to prevent additional loss.

Step Two: Contact Your Insurance Company and Open a Claim
Call your insurer's claims line and report the damage. They'll assign a claim number and schedule an adjuster visit. Write down your claim number immediately and keep it somewhere easy to find. The adjuster's job is to assess the damage on behalf of the insurance company and determine what falls within your coverage. That assessment is not always the final word, and you have the right to have a contractor present during the adjuster's inspection to make sure nothing gets overlooked.
Step Three: Get a Contractor Inspection Before the Adjuster Arrives If Possible
Having a roofing contractor walk the property before or alongside the insurance adjuster is one of the most useful things you can do. A contractor knows what storm damage looks like at the shingle level, at the flashing, and on the decking, and can point out damage that a generalist adjuster might miss or undervalue. A written contractor assessment that aligns with or supplements the adjuster's report strengthens your claim. A good contractor will document damage thoroughly and provide the kind of detailed scope that insurers need to process a claim properly.
Understanding Your Deductible and What Your Policy Covers
Before your claim gets very far, pull out your policy and find your deductible. Oklahoma homeowners' policies increasingly carry separate wind and hail deductibles that are calculated as a percentage of the home's insured value rather than a flat dollar amount. That means your out-of-pocket number may be higher than you'd expect from looking at your standard deductible line. Read the declarations page carefully, or ask your agent to walk you through it. Your policy will also specify whether it pays actual cash value, which accounts for depreciation, or replacement cost value, which covers the cost to actually replace the damaged material at current prices. Replacement cost value is generally the better outcome for the homeowner.
What the Contractor Handles vs. What You Handle
- Your contractor handles: roof inspection and damage documentation, providing a written repair or replacement scope, coordinating scheduling once the claim is approved, and pulling any required permits
- You handle: filing the claim with your insurer, paying your deductible, signing off on the final scope of work, and communicating with your adjuster
- Shared: the adjuster and contractor may need to compare scopes if there is a difference in what was identified, and you as the homeowner are the decision-maker in that process
- Never sign over your claim entirely to a contractor before work is complete. A contractor who insists on an Assignment of Benefits before touching the job is a red flag worth paying attention to.
Oklahoma Law and Roofing Contractors: What You Should Know
Oklahoma law prohibits contractors from waiving a homeowner's deductible as an inducement to hire them. If a contractor tells you they'll 'handle your deductible' or build it into the claim so you don't pay anything out of pocket, that's an illegal practice in Oklahoma and a sign you're dealing with someone you don't want doing work on your home. A legitimate contractor gives you a fair price for the work, helps you document the damage thoroughly, and lets the claim process run its proper course.
If the First Offer Seems Low
Insurance adjusters are human and miss things. If the initial settlement offer doesn't align with the contractor's assessment of what the damage requires to fix properly, you can request a reinspection, submit the contractor's documentation as a supplement, or ask your insurer to explain the difference in scope. Most carriers have a process for supplemental claims, and a well-documented contractor report is the most effective tool you have in that conversation.
