Soft metal shows hail impact clearly and is often the first clue to check when the shingles themselves are harder to read from the ground. If the metal took hits, the shingles usually did too.
Granules piling up at the base of downspouts
Hail knocks the protective granule coating loose from the shingle mat, and it washes down with the gutters into the downspouts. Scattered granule loss like this is different from the even wear of an aging roof.
Soft or bruised spots felt across the shingle surface
A bruised shingle can look normal but has lost some of its structural integrity where the hail hit. These spots fail early because the sun works on the exposed, weakened mat.
Damage to siding, screens, or AC fins nearby
Hail damages more than the roof, and finding hits on siding or an outdoor AC unit is a good sign the roof needs a close look too.

Hail bruises the asphalt mat and knocks granules loose, weakening the shingle even where it has not visibly cracked. It shortens the shingle's remaining life whether or not it leaks right away.

Hailstorms often bring wind that lifts or creases shingles at the same time, and the two types of damage need to be told apart during the inspection.
An aging roof that had less resistance to begin with
Shingles nearing the end of their service life bruise and crack more easily than newer ones under the same hail. If the roof was already due, hail can be the deciding factor toward replacement.
Impact damage that reached the decking, not just the shingles
A hard enough hit, or a falling branch during the same storm, can crack the decking underneath the shingles. This needs to be checked from the attic side, not just the roof surface.

Does hail damage always mean a full roof replacement?
